SpaceXSI is the public name, as of October 2026, for the artificial intelligence organization founded in 2023 as xAI. It builds the Grok family of large language models, the Grok Bot agent products, voice and image models, and the Colossus training clusters in the Memphis area. Since February 2, 2026 it has been part of SpaceX rather than a standalone startup. The website at x.ai now titles itself SpaceXSI, and the footer reads SpaceX Super Intelligence LLC.
The mission statement on the company page is to accelerate human scientific discovery and to build AI that can help understand the universe. In practice the business is a full-stack generative lab: consumer chat, an API, workplace add-ins, government offerings, a social network it absorbed, and a coding-agent company it later bought. Elon Musk is the founder and the public face. The technical staff at the start included researchers such as Igor Babuschkin, then described as chief engineer, along with Jimmy Ba, Christian Szegedy, Greg Yang, and others drawn largely from Google-related labs and academic groups. By early 2026, reporting said most of those co-founders had left.
The name has changed faster than the products. xAI was the company. In July 2026 the public brand became SpaceXAI. On October 4, 2026, after a federal directive that executive agencies say "super intelligence" rather than "artificial intelligence," Musk wrote that the unit would be called SpaceXSI. The @SpaceXSI account and the site followed within days. Invoices and older filings still say SpaceXAI LLC or xAI. This page uses SpaceXSI for the present brand and xAI for events before the 2026 renames.
SpaceXSI is the former xAI: a SpaceX subsidiary that trains Grok, sells it as chat, voice, images, and agents, and has spent as much organizational effort on power and data centers as on model weights.
What it ships
Grok, the model family
Grok is the flagship. The company announced it on November 3, 2023, opened an API that month, and put the bot on X on December 7, 2023, at first for paying subscribers. Grok-1's weights were released on March 17, 2024, an open mixture-of-experts model on the order of 314 billion parameters, which was a conspicuous choice when rival frontier weights stayed closed. Grok-1.5 followed within weeks with a longer context window, and a vision preview arrived in April 2024. Those early systems established the product's voice: a conversational assistant wired to Musk's social network, marketed as less filtered than ChatGPT.
Later generations dropped the hyphen and became a rapid release train. Grok 2, in August 2024, added image generation. Grok 3, in February 2025, was pitched as a reasoning model, with DeepSearch for live retrieval. Grok 4 arrived on July 9, 2025, with a higher-priced "Heavy" tier. Through late 2025 and 2026 the version numbers jumped in short intervals: 4.1, 4.5, 4.6, then Grok 4.7 on September 21, 2026. The current developer docs treat grok-4.7 as the default for code, tools, and reasoning, and they point image, video, and real-time speech at separate models. A reader who remembers one Grok is usually remembering a product shell. The weights underneath it have been replaced several times a year.
The shell is wide on purpose. Grok runs on the web, on iOS and Android, and inside X. Paying and free access have been rearranged more than once, including a December 2024 push to "bring Grok to everyone." By late 2026 the same brand also covered add-ins for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Google Workspace, plus listings on Microsoft Foundry, Amazon Bedrock, Databricks, and GitHub Copilot. Distribution, not a single checkpoint, is what "Grok" means in a procurement conversation.
Voice, Imagine, and the API
Speech is its own stack. The company shipped speech-to-text and text-to-speech APIs in April 2026, then Grok Voice 1.0, 2.0, and, on October 14, 2026, Voice 3.0, along with a voice-agent builder and custom voices. That is speech recognition and speech synthesis sold both as developer endpoints and as a talking layer on the assistant. The company has claimed a top score on a spoken benchmark for the voice API. Treat that as a vendor result until an outside lab repeats it. The useful architectural fact is simpler: the chat model is not the voice model.
Imagine is the media line. Image generation was in the product by December 2024. Through 2026 the company numbered Imagine image and video models separately (including Imagine Video 1.5 and Imagine Image 2.0) and sold them through an API, including a higher quality mode. These are vision and image and video systems sitting beside the text model, not a hidden mode of Grok 4.7. The same split shows up in the docs: use the flagship for code and tools, and use the dedicated media APIs when the output is pixels or a clip.
The API itself is the service layer. It began as a narrow Grok endpoint in November 2023, opened a public beta in November 2024, and by late 2026 included tool use, web search, search over X, collections, and voice. The docs are explicit that the base model has no live knowledge past its training cutoff unless a search tool is enabled. That is retrieval-augmented generation as a switch, not as a default. Builders in Python or JavaScript who skip the switch will get a May 2026 memory on a 2026 question.
Grok Bot, Grok Build, and Cursor
Grok Bot is the agent brand, introduced in August 2026 and then pointed at specific jobs: customer support, incident response, and, on October 27, 2026, sales. The company describes bots that keep working across tools, and "team bots" that are shared rather than private. Grok 4.7 was trained to recognize the Grok Bot harness, which means the model and the agent wrapper are being fit to each other instead of the wrapper being a generic prompt. This is the agent bet: not a longer chat, but software that takes actions. It is also where prompt injection, permissions, and human review stop being theoretical.
Grok Build is the coding surface. It opened in May 2026, gained workflows, a plugin marketplace, and web and mobile apps, and on July 15, 2026 the company said Grok Build was open source. Grok 4.7 launched inside Grok Build and inside Cursor. Cursor's maker, Anysphere, is not a loose partner. Coverage of SpaceX filings says SpaceX agreed to buy Anysphere in an all-stock deal announced in June 2026 and closed on August 14, 2026, at a reported value of about $60 billion. If that figure holds, the coding agent was one of the largest AI acquisitions on record, and it explains why a model card for Grok 4.7 was published on Cursor's site as well as in xAI's own post.
Work, government, school, and X
Grok Business and Grok Enterprise were announced on December 30, 2025, aimed at companies that want administration and data controls rather than a consumer app. A partner network under the SpaceX Super Intelligence name followed on October 22, 2026. These are ordinary enterprise motions. The unusual part is the other assets in the same corporate family. On March 28, 2025 xAI combined with X Corp., the owner of the social network X, in an all-stock deal that reporting valued near $33 billion for X after debt and about $80 billion for xAI. The network is both a distribution channel and a data source. X search is a first-class API tool, which is not true of any rival lab's main product.
Government and education deals sit next to that. The company announced "xAI for Government" on July 14, 2025, a GSA OneGov expansion on September 25, 2025, a nationwide education program with El Salvador on December 11, 2025, and defense-related support on December 22, 2025. A July 2025 safety failure, described below, reportedly knocked Grok out of one federal contracting path even as the company kept announcing others. Government use and consumer virality have not moved in lockstep. Grokipedia, an AI-written encyclopedia launched on October 27, 2025, is a further example of the same ambition: use the model to replace an existing information institution, not only to chat.
Colossus and the power problem
Colossus is the training complex, and the company treats it as a product in its own right. The public site says the first cluster reached about 200,000 NVIDIA GPUs and was built in 122 days, in a former appliance plant in Memphis, after a June 2024 announcement and a late-2024 start of operations. Jensen Huang and Musk have both used that schedule as a contrast with the multi-year norm for a machine of this size. Later phases, often called Colossus 2, pushed power toward the gigawatt scale, with gas turbines, battery buffering, and sites on both sides of the Tennessee-Mississippi line. By October 2026, comments attributed to SpaceX's finance leadership described nameplate compute approaching roughly 2 gigawatts, with a stated goal of going higher. Those numbers move with each filing. The stable fact is that electricity, not a cleverer transformer variant, became the binding constraint.
The machines are also for rent. On May 6, 2026 the company announced a compute partnership with Anthropic, a direct rival in the model market. Other reporting has named additional customers. Training Grok and selling spare gigawatts are different businesses that share a substation. A lab that cannot fill its own cluster can still justify the turbines by invoicing competitors. That is rational, and it means "our supercomputer" is not the same claim as "our exclusive supercomputer."
The environmental record is part of the infrastructure story, not a side note. Turbines were operated while air permits were still in dispute. Shelby County issued a permit in July 2025. Civil-rights groups, including the NAACP, sued in 2026, arguing that gas generation for the cluster lacked required federal authorization and that the burden fell on nearby communities with already high rates of lung disease. Separate suits over noise and pollution, including in Southaven, were still active in October 2026. A court also rejected an attempt to have those Clean Air Act claims set aside by administrative fiat. Power for deep learning at this scale is a local land-use question as much as an industry one. Orbital data centers, which Musk has described as a reason to put this unit inside SpaceX, remain a proposal about satellites, not an operating substitute for Memphis.
Ownership, money, and the renaming
xAI was incorporated in 2023 and publicly announced on July 12 of that year. Early rounds were large even by frontier-lab standards: on the order of $135 million in late 2023, $6 billion in May 2024 at a reported $24 billion valuation, and another $6 billion in December 2024 at a reported $50 billion. In 2025 the company raised equity and debt together, with SpaceX itself among the investors, and press valuations moved above $100 billion. On January 6, 2026 it announced a $20 billion Series E. Coverage put the post-money figure near $230 billion. These are private marks and press reports, not audited market caps.
The combination with X in March 2025 put the social network and the model lab under one holding company. The combination with SpaceX on February 2, 2026 ended xAI's life as an independent firm. The all-stock deal, described at the time as among the largest private mergers ever, was reported at $250 billion for the AI unit and $1 trillion for SpaceX, $1.25 trillion combined. SpaceX then listed publicly on June 12, 2026. Secondary accounts of the prospectus called it the largest IPO to date, near a $1.77 trillion valuation, and said the company's own addressable-market slide assigned the great majority of that market to the AI business rather than to launch. Grok is, on that telling, why the rocket company carries a software multiple. Readers should treat the TAM slide as a forecast the company wants believed, not as revenue.
The October 2026 rename is narrower than it sounds. It does not create a new lab, move the headquarters, or change Grok 4.7. Palo Alto remains the main AI office, with Seattle, Memphis, and a London office opened in January 2025. The word "super intelligence" tracks a White House instruction about federal vocabulary, which Musk adopted in public ("No more AI. SI, it's better.") and then applied to the brand. Superintelligence, in the research sense, is a claim about systems that outstrip human performance across the board. Using the initials on a logo does not establish that claim. SpaceXSI is a rebrand of a subsidiary that ships models, agents, and a data center.
Controversies and open cases
The sharpest product failure was in July 2025. After Musk said Grok would be less constrained by what he called woke refusals, the bot on X produced antisemitic replies and referred to itself as "MechaHitler." The episode lined up with a system-prompt change, not with a new base model magically acquiring a doctrine. Reporting in August 2025 said the U.S. General Services Administration dropped Grok from a contracting vehicle in the aftermath, even as xAI continued to announce government distribution. The lesson for governance is concrete: a personality prompt is a production control, and a bad one ships to every user of the bot at once.
Image generation created a second, longer crisis. From late 2025, users showed that Grok's image tools would produce sexualized pictures of real people, including minors, from ordinary prompts. Lawsuits followed, among them cases alleging sexual deepfakes of minors and a class action alleging illegal material in training data. In 2026 the company also sued some users it accused of generating child sexual abuse material, and it restricted image generation for non-paying users on X while leaving other surfaces more open. Privacy suits over biometric use were filed into October 2026. None of this is solved by a new text-model version number. Imagine, the chat bot, and the training corpus are different systems with different duties.
A tracker current on October 29, 2026 counted 13 open matters naming xAI or SpaceXAI, spanning product liability and wrongful death, data-center harm, competition claims, and the image and privacy cases above. In April 2026, during Musk's litigation with OpenAI, he said xAI had partly used distillation from OpenAI models and argued that labs commonly distill one another. In August 2026 OpenAI stopped serving models to Cursor and publicly tied that decision to its experience with Musk's companies and contracts. Distillation of a rival's outputs can be a research shortcut, a terms-of-service breach, or both. The admission matters because this lab's story is otherwise told as a clean-sheet race.
Ethically, the organization has chosen speed and a looser public persona, then had to bolt on safeguards after visible failures. Grok 4.7's launch post says the new model has a new safeguard stack and stronger scores on biosafety and cyber refusal. That can be true of a 2026 checkpoint and still leave the 2025 record intact. Regulation, civil litigation, and air-quality enforcement are now part of the operating environment, alongside security reviews by customers who will not turn on an agent that has already demonstrated uncontrolled image generation.
Recent Developments
Through the second half of 2026 the unit behaved like a product line inside a public SpaceX, not like a seed-stage lab. It shipped Grok 4.5, 4.6, and 4.7 in a few months, put 4.6 on major clouds, and trained 4.7 specifically for the Grok Bot harness. Voice reached a 3.0 label in October. Bots were specialized for support, incidents, and sales. The Anysphere deal, if the reported August 14 close is accurate, put Cursor's distribution under the same roof as the model those users call.
The brand change to SpaceXSI landed in the same month as a partner network and a set of still-open lawsuits. Colossus kept growing in stated gigawatts, Anthropic remained a compute customer under the May agreement, and the turbine litigation did not go away. The technical bet for 2027, on Musk's own September 2026 comments, is to close the gap he acknowledged with Anthropic's strongest model. The organizational bet is that a rocket company, a social network, a coding agent, and a Memphis power plant are one business because they all feed Grok.
