Grok Bot is SpaceXAI's (formerly xAI) product for persistent AI agents, which the company calls "AI teammates." Each Bot is a named, always-on agent that:
- Has its own computer: Bots work on a cloud computer with a browser, files, and a terminal.
- Works in your tools: Bots sign into your existing apps and websites, including ones with no clean API or MCP server.
- Keeps going: Work continues 24/7, even when your own device is closed.
- Behaves like a colleague: You message a Bot from desktop or iPhone, and it returns only when something needs your decision or approval.
Grok Bot started as an internal SpaceXAI prototype for sales, marketing, operations, and engineering work, and launched in beta on August 11, 2026. It is built with Cursor and uses Cursor accounts, authentication, and data settings. SpaceXAI's Grok 4.7 model was trained to natively understand the Grok Bot harness.
- The Mechanism: Every Bot on a user's account shares one cloud computer, but each Bot gets its own screen, so several can work in parallel. The shared parts and the private parts differ:
- Shared across Bots: files, browser sessions, and command-line credentials on the cloud computer
- Private to each Bot: its role, preferences, conversation history, and summaries of earlier work
Context moves between Bots through shared files, direct messages, group chats of two to six Bots, and explicit handoffs. A common pattern is a "chief of staff" Bot that coordinates specialist Bots. Bots reach structured tools through connectors, plugins, and MCP servers from the Marketplace, and fall back to browser-based computer use when no connector exists. Repeatable work becomes:
- Skills: a reusable procedure with steps, decision rules, output requirements, and approval boundaries
- Routines: a skill that runs on a schedule or, where supported, after an event
- Teach a task: you perform a browser workflow once while the Bot watches, and it drafts a skill for you to review
- The Physics: Always-on agents with real credentials run under hard constraints of trust, access, and capacity:
- Security boundary: All Bots for one user share the same computer, so SpaceXAI says separate Bots are not separate security boundaries.
- Irreversibility: An approval controls a proposed action but does not reverse work already completed.
- Web friction: Websites can change, block automation, or demand CAPTCHAs, which is why SpaceXAI recommends connectors over browser control when both exist.
- Human-only steps: Passwords, passkeys, two-factor codes, CAPTCHAs, and payment confirmations require the user to take control of the Bot's computer.
- Usage limits: Grok Bot has its own usage allowance, separate from Grok and Cursor plans. One hands-on tester reported a multi-Bot "swarm" stalling mid-task after hitting a weekly limit.
- Why This Matters: Grok Bot is SpaceXAI's bid to own the general-purpose office version of the AI agent, beyond coding.
- Work lands in the real tool: SpaceXAI's internal examples include a sales Bot updating the CRM from call transcripts, an ops Bot processing invoices from Gmail, and an engineering Bot reproducing a bug, filing the ticket, and handing the fix to a debugging Bot.
- Model and harness trained together: Grok 4.7 was trained on the Grok Bot harness, so the model and the agent runtime are designed as a pair.
- A new route into business budgets: Because Grok Bot runs on Cursor accounts, it gives Cursor's developer customer base a path into sales, support, finance, and operations work.
- Fast adoption: Grok Bot reportedly reached 418,000 weekly active users by September 14, 2026, about five weeks after launch.
Building Blocks
| Component | What It Does | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bot | A persistent, named agent with one main job, a role description, and its own memory. | SpaceXAI recommends focused Bots, since a narrow role builds more useful context over time. |
| Agent Computer | A shared cloud computer with browser, files, and command-line tools; each Bot has its own screen. | Users can take control for sensitive steps. Running commands on the user's local computer is a separate permission, set to "Ask every time" by default. |
| Group chat and handoffs | Two to six Bots coordinate in a thread, pass ownership, and pull in the human only for judgment calls. | Bots can also message each other directly and share context across projects. |
| Plugins, connectors, and MCP | Structured access to apps through the Marketplace (Settings, then Plugins). | Preferred over browser control when available, because it is more reliable. |
| Skills and routines | Saved procedures that run on demand, on a schedule, or after an event. | "Teach a task" turns one watched demonstration into a draft skill. |
| Approvals and Auto Review | Allow once, Always allow, or Deny for proposed actions. Auto Review screens tool calls and computer actions with "Ask first" and "Allow automatically" rules. | "Ask first" wins when rules conflict. Auto Review is model-based and meant to complement, not replace, least privilege. |
| Team Bots | One shared Bot that a whole team uses, with the same files, apps, plugins, credentials, and memory. | Public beta since September 28, 2026, on Teams and Enterprise plans. |
Getting Started
- Access: Grok Bot is in beta for SuperGrok, SuperGrok Plus, and SuperGrok Heavy subscribers, and for Cursor Pro, Pro+, Ultra, and Cursor Teams subscribers. Usage is metered separately from those plans. Reported entry points range from about $20 a month (Cursor Pro) or $30 a month (SuperGrok) up to SuperGrok Heavy at $300 a month.
- Install: Download the desktop app for macOS or Windows from
x.ai/botand sign in with a Cursor account. The iPhone companion app syncs the same Bots and conversations. - Create a Bot: Choose a suggested role or define your own. Give it a short name, one main job, and a clear description of how it should work and what it must not do.
- Hand off a task: A good first request states the result you want, the sources it may use, its limits, the output format, and when you want to review.
- Connect tools: Open Settings, then Plugins, then Marketplace, to install connectors and MCP servers. Connect only what a workflow needs.
- Set guardrails: Put explicit approval boundaries in requests for sending, publishing, purchases, deletions, permission changes, production changes, and accepting legal terms. Add Auto Review rules under Settings, then General, then Auto-review.
- Scale up: Put several Bots in a group chat, or share a Bot with your team as a Team Bot.
- Support: Grok Bot support runs through Cursor at
hi@cursor.com.
Known Limitations
- Beta status: Grok Bot is still labeled beta, and features vary by plan and rollout.
- Shared-computer risk: Files, browser sessions, and credentials on the cloud computer are available to every Bot on the account. Deleting a Bot does not remove those files or sessions.
- Sharing risk: A public share link copies only a Bot's configuration, not its computer or logins. SpaceXAI still warns against putting secrets, customer data, or internal URLs in a shared Bot.
- Privacy settings: Grok Bot requires data storage and does not support Cursor's Legacy Privacy Mode. Training opt-out follows Cursor account settings.
- User liability: Grok Bot's terms make users responsible for actions their agents take, including with third-party services such as financial institutions.
- Platform coverage: At launch, Grok Bot ran on macOS, Windows, and iPhone. Linux desktop, Android, and iPad were not supported at launch.
