The You Research Agent is You.com's line of deep research agents, which plan a research strategy, run many searches, read and cross-check sources, and return a cited report. The line has three generations:

  • Research Agent (2024): A mode in You.com's chat product that ran multiple searches from one prompt and produced a cited report, with citations linking to the exact sentence they support.
  • ARI, Advanced Research & Insights (2025): A professional-grade research agent that analyzes up to 400 sources and produces reports with charts and visualizations in minutes. An enterprise edition connects to internal data.
  • Research API (2026): The same agentic research exposed as a developer endpoint with five effort tiers, plus a specialized Finance Research API.

You.com was founded by Richard Socher and Bryan McCann. It began as a privacy-minded search engine and now positions itself mainly as web-intelligence infrastructure for AI agents, while its chat app still offers ARI, model choice, and custom agents.

You.com turned deep research into an API call: one request plans the search, reads hundreds of sources, verifies the hard claims, and returns a cited answer, at whatever depth, latency, and price the job demands.

  • The Mechanism: The Research API runs an agent harness designed to maximize agent autonomy with minimal human steering. It uses You.com's own Search, Contents, and Live News APIs as tools, choosing sources for freshness and diversity. The research path changes with the query, so a math question follows a different trajectory than a compliance question or a competitive landscape analysis. You.com's July 2026 update added two capabilities to the deepest tier:
    • Browser control: The agent can drive a browser to reach content behind interactions, such as dropdowns or click-through data tables.
    • Code execution: The agent can run code to analyze files it retrieves.

Responses come back as Markdown with inline citation tags and a sources array that maps each citation to a URL and snippets. Developers can pass a schema to get typed JSON instead of prose.

  • The Physics: Deep research collides with hard limits on context, compute, time, and connections:
    • Context: A deep research run generates far more information than any model's context window can hold. You.com uses context masking and compaction so the agent can reason coherently across hundreds or thousands of turns.
    • Compute: Long-horizon tasks can run more than 1,000 reasoning turns and use up to 10 million tokens on a single query.
    • Effort budgets: Each request gets a budget set by its effort tier. The agent spends more of that budget verifying high-stakes, ambiguous claims than clear, well-sourced facts.
    • Latency and cost: Tiers range from under 10 seconds at $12 per 1,000 requests to over 300 seconds at $1,200 per 1,000 requests.
    • Connections: Runs longer than a few minutes can outlive a network connection. The asynchronous background mode returns a job ID immediately and supports retry from checkpoint.
  • Why This Matters: You.com is betting that research itself becomes a building block for other agents.
    • Research as a primitive: The API handles query decomposition and synthesis server-side, so developers don't have to orchestrate multiple search rounds themselves.
    • Benchmark claims: You.com reports top accuracy on DeepSearchQA and FinSearchComp, two benchmarks for multi-step information seeking (vendor-reported).
    • Easy access: The You.com MCP server is free to start with no API key, signup, or billing, and exposes search, page extraction, and research as tools.
    • Strategic pivot: You.com's 2025 Series C framed the company as "infrastructure for the agentic era," and its homepage now leads with APIs rather than consumer search.
    • Recognition: ARI was named one of TIME's Best Inventions of 2025.

Research Effort Tiers

The Research API's research_effort parameter sets how much research compute each request uses (prices as of July 2026):

Tier Price per 1,000 Requests Latency Best Used For
lite $12 Under 10 seconds Quick factual lookups and simple searches.
standard (default) $50 Under 30 seconds Balanced depth for most production traffic.
deep $100 Under 120 seconds Complex multi-source research and synthesis.
exhaustive $450 Under 300 seconds Comprehensive analysis across dozens of sources.
frontier $1,200 Over 300 seconds The deepest analysis, for vertical copilots, market intelligence, and regulatory monitoring.

The Frontier tier's terms changed between releases:

  • February 2026 launch: over $2,000 per 1,000 requests, latency over 1,000 seconds, and pricing by contacting You.com
  • July 2026 update: $1,200 per 1,000 requests and latency over 300 seconds

Finance Research API: A specialized endpoint built on the Research API.

  • Data: It adds licensed structured data from S&P Global, SEC/EDGAR filings, central banks, and market feeds.
  • Reconciliation: It matches each figure to the exact period, unit, source, and definition the user asked for.
  • Pricing: Per request, in two depth tiers.

Getting Started

  • Get a key: Sign up at you.com/platform. No credit card is required for testing.
  • Call the API: Send a POST request with your question and an effort tier:
curl --request POST \
 --url https://api.you.com/v1/research \
 --header 'Content-Type: application/json' \
 --header 'X-API-Key: API_KEY' \
 --data '{"input": "YOUR QUESTION", "research_effort": "standard"}'
  • Python SDK: The official youdotcom package exposes the same call as you.research(...).
  • Long jobs: Set background to true for deep or Frontier runs, then retrieve the result by job ID.
  • Scope the research: Restrict domains with an allowlist or blocklist, limit freshness to a day, week, month, or custom range, filter by country, and pass an output schema for typed JSON.
  • Finance questions: Call api.you.com/v1/finance_research. It searches a finance-optimized index and does not support domain controls or output schemas, so use the general Research API when you need those. The Finance Research API is also sold through AWS Marketplace.
  • Agents and automation: Connect any MCP client to the You.com MCP server, which exposes you-search, you-contents, and you-research. The n8n You.com node supports background research.
  • No-code use: ARI is available in the You.com chat app on web and mobile, alongside model choice and file analysis.

Known Limitations

  • Vendor-reported benchmarks: DeepSearchQA, FinSearchComp, and SimpleQA results, along with ARI's claim of beating OpenAI's Deep Research in 76% of head-to-head tests, come from You.com's own testing.
  • Mixed independent results: A September 2026 independent test of multi-hop company search ranked You.com's Search API 8th of 20 configurations, at 38.6% F1 versus 46.5% for the leader. That test measured the Search API behind a third-party agent, not the Research API.
  • Slow deep tiers: Deep, Exhaustive, and Frontier runs take minutes, so production use needs the asynchronous mode.
  • Easy to overspend: You.com itself warns that using the deepest tier on every call burns through budgets quickly. Most workflows belong on standard.
  • Finance API gaps: The Finance Research API lacks the domain-control and output-schema options of the general Research API.
  • Shifting focus: You.com now leads with developer APIs, so consumer chat features may get less emphasis than the API platform.
