Siri AI is Apple's rebuilt version of Siri, powered by the next generation of Apple Intelligence. It replaces the original 2011 assistant with a conversational one that can:

  • Understand personal context: It finds what you need across your messages, emails, photos, and more.
  • See your screen: Onscreen awareness lets it answer questions and act on whatever you're looking at.
  • Know the world: Broad world knowledge pulls up-to-date answers from the web.
  • Take action: Systemwide app actions let it draft an email from scratch or edit and share a set of photos.

Apple unveiled Siri AI at WWDC on June 8, 2026, and began rolling it out in beta, in English, with its 2027 software releases on September 14, 2026. It arrived roughly two years after Apple first demonstrated a more personal Siri in 2024. Its new Apple Foundation Models were built in collaboration with Google and its Gemini models.

Siri AI is Apple's bet that the most useful assistant is the one that already knows your life: it reads your messages, mail, photos, and screen on your own device, borrows frontier-level reasoning from Private Cloud Compute, and acts inside the apps you already use.

  • The Mechanism: Siri AI runs on the next generation of Apple Foundation Models, which operate both on device and on Apple servers using Private Cloud Compute. A system orchestrator connects the models to two core capabilities that work entirely on device:
    • Spotlight index: the searchable store of a user's personal content, which supplies personal context
    • App Toolbox: the set of actions apps make available for Siri to perform

Personal context extends to third-party apps when developers integrate with Spotlight. For voices and dictation, a separate on-device model, AFM Core Advanced, powers more expressive, customizable voices and dictation that handles capitalization, punctuation, and formatting automatically.

  • The Physics: An assistant built into billions of devices runs under hard limits on hardware, capacity, privacy, and regulation:
    • Device support: Siri AI requires an Apple Intelligence-capable device. AFM Core Advanced needs even newer hardware, such as the iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro, or an M3 Mac or M4 iPad with at least 12 GB of unified memory.
    • Server capacity: Features that rely on server-side models, including Siri AI, face daily usage limits that vary with request complexity and system demand. Apple says expanded access will be available for a fee in the future.
    • Privacy by architecture: When Private Cloud Compute handles a request, personal data is not stored or made accessible to Apple or anyone else, and outside experts can verify that claim. On Apple Watch Series 12, a hardware-isolated Secure Exclave processes audio and deletes it immediately.
    • Regulation: Siri AI is not initially available in the EU on iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch, and new Apple Intelligence features are not available in China while Apple works through regulatory requirements.
  • Why This Matters: Siri AI is Apple's answer to years of criticism that its assistant had fallen behind ChatGPT and Gemini.
    • Reach: The assistant lives inside the operating system across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple Vision Pro, CarPlay, and AirPods, rather than in a separate app.
    • A rival's model inside: Apple chose Google's Gemini as the foundation for its next-generation models after evaluating alternatives. Bloomberg reported the deal at about $1 billion a year, a figure Apple has not confirmed.
    • Privacy positioning: Apple calls Siri the world's most private digital assistant, pairing on-device processing with verifiable Private Cloud Compute instead of conventional cloud AI.
    • Developer reach: Third-party apps gain an AI front door. Siri AI already works with apps like WhatsApp and Audible, with Microsoft Outlook, Notability, and Tripsy coming.

Ways to Use Siri AI

Device or Surface How to Invoke It What's New
iPhone "Hey Siri," the side button, or a swipe down from the Dynamic Island. In-depth conversational answers. The Camera app gains a Siri mode that can, for example, read a festival poster and create calendar events for set times.
iPad and Mac Spotlight, Control-click context menus, a dedicated Visual Intelligence keyboard shortcut (Mac), or the screenshot experience (iPad). Ask about any image, file, or text on screen. Visual Intelligence arrives on iPad and Mac for the first time.
Apple Vision Pro A 3D Siri visualization you place in your space, then look at and speak to. Ask about app windows or physical objects just by looking at them.
Apple Watch From the wrist, or a Smart Stack suggestion to continue a recent conversation. On Series 12 and Ultra 4, Audio Intelligence adds Live Rewind (the last 15 seconds of a conversation as text) and Siri Recap (high-level conversation summaries), arriving in beta late 2026.
Siri app A dedicated app on every supported device. Revisit or start conversations, with history synced privately through iCloud across devices.
Writing Tools Anywhere you type. Draft from a description, revise by describing changes, match your usual tone with each Mail or Messages recipient, and get automatic proofreading in most third-party apps.

Getting Started

  • Check your device: Siri AI runs on Apple Intelligence-enabled devices:
    • iPhone 16 or later, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max
    • iPad mini (A17 Pro) and iPads with M1 or later
    • MacBook Neo (A18 Pro) and Macs with M1 or later
    • Apple Vision Pro
    • Apple Watch Series 9 or later, Ultra 2 or later, or SE 3, paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone nearby
  • Update: Install iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, or visionOS 27.
  • Set your language: Siri AI's beta starts in English. French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish follow in October 2026.
  • Turn it on: Enable Apple Intelligence and Siri in Settings, then invoke Siri by voice, the side button, the Dynamic Island, Spotlight, or the Siri app.
  • Use personal context: Ask about things in your own messages, mail, photos, and notes, such as a restaurant a friend recommended or a confirmation number from an old email.
  • For developers: Integrate with Spotlight so Siri AI can use your app's content as personal context, and expose app actions so Siri can act inside your app. Developers can also tap Apple's on-device model directly through the Foundation Models framework, introduced in 2025.

Known Limitations

  • Beta status: Siri AI launched as a beta, and some promised capabilities, such as Live Rewind, Siri Recap, and several third-party integrations, arrive later.
  • Language and region gaps: The beta starts in English only. Siri AI is unavailable at launch on iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch in the EU, and in China.
  • Usage caps and future fees: Server-side features have daily limits, and Apple plans to charge for expanded access.
  • Hardware gating: Older devices cannot run Siri AI, and the best voices and dictation require the newest models with 12 GB or more of memory.
  • Age limit: Siri AI is not available to users under 13.
  • Track record: Apple first promised a personal-context Siri in 2024 and delayed it repeatedly, so some features may continue to roll out in stages.
