Webflow AI is the umbrella name for the artificial intelligence features and agent tools built into Webflow, the San Francisco company whose visual platform lets designers, developers, and marketers build, host, and manage professional websites without hand-writing most of the code. It spans an AI site builder that drafts a multi-page site from a prompt, a conversational AI Assistant inside the Designer, App Gen for generating full-stack web apps, a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that lets outside assistants such as Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini work directly on Webflow sites, Webflow AEO for visibility in AI answer engines, and AI-powered testing and personalization in Webflow Optimize. In September 2026 the company added Source by Webflow, a research-preview platform where marketing teams and their AI agents build and run sites together in shared, code-native workspaces. Taken together, these products mark Webflow's shift from a visual website builder into what CEO Linda Tong calls an "agentic web marketing platform." For broader context on tools in this category, see Codeless Options, Code Generators, Drag n' Drop and the Visual and Low-Code Agent Builder Comparison.

Webflow AI matters because the web is being reshaped from two directions at once: generative AI makes it cheap to produce pages, and AI answer engines increasingly decide which brands people ever see. Think of Webflow's strategy as running both a factory and a lighthouse: the factory side uses AI to draft pages, apps, and campaigns quickly but on-brand, while the lighthouse side uses analytics and agents to make sure the result is visible and cited when someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, or Gemini a question. Webflow, founded in 2013, reports about 3.5 million users and has raised roughly $335 million, and its MCP server was being used by more than 30% of enterprise customers by mid-2026. The company also restructured in May 2026, cutting staff to focus on the agentic strategy, so its AI products are now central to its future rather than a side feature.

Webflow AI turns the website from a finished project into a living system that humans and AI agents build, measure, and improve together, with brand rules and governance built in rather than bolted on.

History and Company

Webflow was founded in 2013 by brothers Vlad and Sergie Magdalin and Bryant Chou, graduated from Y Combinator that year, and spent its first decade building a visual development tool that writes clean HTML, CSS, and JavaScript behind a designer-friendly canvas. Growth accelerated during the pandemic: Webflow raised a $140 million Series B in January 2021 at a $2.1 billion valuation and a $120 million Series C in March 2022 that valued the company at about $4 billion, with investors including Accel, CapitalG, and Silversmith Capital Partners. Linda Tong, a former AppDynamics executive who joined as chief operating officer in 2022 and later became president, was named CEO in June 2024, while Vlad Magdalin became chief innovation officer and remained chair of the board. Under Tong, Webflow repositioned itself first as a "Website Experience Platform" and then, in 2026, as an agentic web marketing platform aimed at enterprise marketing teams.

Acquisitions supplied several of Webflow AI's building blocks. In April 2024 Webflow bought Intellimize, an AI-driven website personalization and conversion optimization company whose technology became Webflow Optimize, and its co-founder Guy Yalif joined to lead personalization and later became chief evangelist. In October 2024 Webflow acquired GreenSock, maker of the GSAP JavaScript animation library, which now underpins animations that AI agents can create through the MCP server. On March 12, 2026, Webflow acquired Vidoso.ai, a small AI content generation startup whose technology powers the Assets tool for on-brand creative.

Webflow's AI rollout accelerated from 2025 onward. The AI site builder arrived in early 2025, Webflow Cloud for hosting full-stack apps launched in private beta on May 5, 2025 and became generally available that July, and Webflow Conf 2025 in New York introduced a reimagined AI Assistant and "prompt-to-production" code generation. App Gen followed in public beta in November 2025, and 2026 brought the Claude connector (February), Webflow AEO (announced in April and generally available for Enterprise in May), a ChatGPT app (July), MCP 2.0 (July), Source and MCP 2.1 at Webflow Conf 2026 in Boston (September), and a Gemini connected app and the standalone Campaigns tool (October). On May 27, 2026, Tong announced a restructuring that laid off a significant share of employees, which an outside estimate put near 200, and refocused the company on building the agentic web marketing platform.

How Webflow AI Works

Webflow organizes its AI around the life cycle of a site: build, manage, analyze, and optimize. On the build side, the AI site builder and AI Assistant generate layouts, copy, styles, and components that land as ordinary Webflow elements on the canvas, so humans can keep editing them visually rather than inheriting a black box. App Gen and AI code components go further by writing React code that is styled with the site's own design system, connected to its CMS, and deployed to Webflow Cloud, which runs on Cloudflare's network and supports Next.js and Astro apps with built-in storage. On the manage side, Agent Instructions store brand voice, design rules, legal language, and CMS guidance as markdown files that both Webflow AI and outside agents read before acting, which helps keep generated work on-brand.

On the analyze and optimize side, Webflow uses data that only a host can see. Because Webflow serves the site, Webflow Analyze can report how AI crawlers visit pages and how many visitors arrive from large language models, and Webflow AEO adds prompt tracking, citation rates, and agents that recommend and draft fixes. Webflow Optimize runs A/B tests and AI-driven personalization, and since 2025 it can suggest test variants such as new headlines or calls to action based on conversion best practices. The common thread is a closed loop: measure what humans and AI systems do with the site, have agents propose changes, let people approve them, and publish without leaving the platform.

The Webflow MCP server is what connects this loop to outside AI tools. Built on Webflow's APIs, it exposes tools that let an assistant create elements, styles, and variables, manage CMS collections and items, run audits, read analytics, and deploy Webflow Cloud apps, and it is available through an official Claude connector, a ChatGPT app, a Cursor plugin, a Gemini connected app, and manual configuration at https://mcp.webflow.com/mcp. MCP 2.0, released on July 21, 2026, made most element, component, style, and variable operations work without an open Designer session, added analytics and sitemap tools, delivered Agent Instructions to outside agents automatically, enforced team roles and permissions, and logged every change with AI attribution. The small MCP Bridge app inside the Designer is now needed only for tasks that require live visual context, such as prompts that refer to a specific element on screen.

Webflow AI Offerings

Webflow is an organization with many distinct AI offerings, so each is described below in turn. The products differ in who they serve, from solo designers using the free Starter plan to enterprise marketing teams with dedicated contracts, and several are still in beta or research preview. Availability and credit use are summarized in the table at the end of this section and in the Pricing section.

AI Site Builder and AI Assistant

The AI site builder turns a description of a business into a responsive site with a scalable design system, and since a February 2026 update it can create multi-page sites of up to five pages directly in the site creation flow. Users reach it by choosing New Site from the Webflow Dashboard, and a Workspace administrator must have the Webflow AI toggle switched on in Workspace settings. The AI Assistant, reimagined at Webflow Conf 2025 as a conversational partner across the platform, can help build and edit layouts, generate copy and CMS items, and run code generation without leaving the Designer. Webflow positions both tools as starting points that keep designers in control, in contrast to AI builders that output finished but hard-to-edit sites.

App Gen, Component Gen, and Webflow Cloud

App Gen, launched in public beta in November 2025, lets anyone turn a prompt into a production-grade web app such as an event calendar, pricing calculator, job board, or location finder that inherits the site's variables, components, and styles, connects to its CMS, and deploys to Webflow Cloud with a click. Webflow pitches this as an answer to generative "vibe coding" tools whose prototypes must be rebuilt before launch, arguing that Webflow starts from a brand's real design system and content rather than a blank screen. A companion capability for AI-generated code components, discussed by Webflow as Component Gen, lets teams create reusable React components, and Webflow has said it is working on authentication, databases, third-party integrations, and more complex logic for generated apps. App Gen is free during the beta, while production apps follow Webflow Cloud pricing.

Webflow MCP and AI Connectors

Webflow was among the first website platforms to ship an MCP server, and it is now the main way outside agents work with Webflow. Anthropic launched an official Webflow connector for Claude on February 9, 2026, Webflow released a ChatGPT app on July 1, and on October 15, 2026, Webflow became a connected app inside Google's Gemini app, initially for English-language users in the United States with personal Google accounts and without consuming Webflow AI credits. Developers can also connect Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, OpenAI Codex, and other MCP clients, and Webflow runs a separate beta server for experimental tools. MCP 2.1, announced at Webflow Conf 2026, lets agents build timeline-based GSAP interactions from prompts, sort and filter CMS data on custom fields, and read Webflow Cloud error logs so tools like Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor can troubleshoot and redeploy apps.

Webflow AEO

Webflow AEO (answer engine optimization) is Webflow's closed-loop system for being found, understood, and cited by AI answer engines. Its analytics, part of Webflow Analyze for Enterprise, track brand mentions and citations for chosen prompts across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity, show which AI bots crawl which pages, and connect AI-referred visits to conversions, while its agents scan pages, CMS items, components, and images for issues such as stale schema, overlong meta descriptions, broken links, and missing alt text. Recommendations land in a review queue where people accept, edit, or reject them, and since July 28, 2026, content optimization agents can find topics where competitors are cited instead of the customer and draft original CMS articles to close the gap. Webflow AEO was announced on April 13, 2026, became generally available to Enterprise customers in May, and is not sold as a standalone product, with AEO agents consuming AI credits when they run.

Optimize, Analyze, and Localization

Webflow Optimize, built on the Intellimize acquisition, runs A/B tests and AI-driven personalization that tailors page content to different visitor segments, and its AI suggestions propose headline, call-to-action, and copy variants to test. Webflow Analyze provides built-in site analytics and, for Enterprise customers, the AEO analytics described above, and both products can export data to warehouses for wider analytics work. Webflow Localization uses machine translation to adapt static pages, CMS content, SEO settings, and styles for different locales, supporting language translation at the scale of a whole site. Optimize and Localization have their own pricing, and their AI features do not consume Webflow AI credits.

Source by Webflow, Campaigns, and Assets

Source by Webflow, unveiled on September 2, 2026 as a limited research preview, is a new platform where marketers, designers, developers, and AI agents share governed, code-native workspaces connected to a company's codebase and marketing technology stack. Agents get direct access to code so they can make larger changes, while each team member works in a customizable "View" suited to their role. Campaigns, launched as a standalone tool on October 20, 2026, starts from a company URL, builds a brand system, refines a campaign brief, and generates landing pages, audience or keyword variants, and ad creative that can be pushed to channels such as Google Ads, with connections to HubSpot and Salesforce for pipeline tracking. Assets, built on Vidoso technology and entering beta in October 2026, lets agents find and adapt approved brand creative, such as trimming video and adding captions for social channels.

Summary of Offerings

The table below summarizes Webflow's AI offerings as of November 2026. Most features require the Webflow AI toggle to be enabled in Workspace settings, and Enterprise customers may also need to enable it per site. Pricing

Webflow prices its platform through Site plans (hosting and features for each site) and Workspace plans (seats and collaboration), and since May 13, 2026, every Workspace plan includes AI credits that meter usage of certain AI features. Credit limits began to be enforced on June 29, 2026, credits reset monthly on self-serve plans and yearly on Team and Enterprise plans, unused credits expire, and Webflow does not publish a per-action rate card because more complex tasks consume more credits. The same May update merged the old CMS and Business plans into a single Premium plan, introduced a Team plan between self-serve and Enterprise, and drew criticism from some agencies and freelancers who saw higher costs for existing sites. Prices below are in US dollars and reflect Webflow's published rates in late 2026.

Plan or add-on Price AI-related allowances and notes
Starter Site plan Free Webflow AI features available for building and testing; Starter Workspace includes 200 AI credits per month

Getting Started: Build a Site with AI and Manage It from Claude

The fastest way to see Webflow AI in action is to generate a small site with the AI site builder and then let an outside AI assistant add structured content through the MCP server. The example below uses a free Webflow Starter account and a paid Claude plan, which the Claude connector requires, and it takes about 20 minutes. Everything the AI creates stays editable in the Webflow Designer, so you can inspect and adjust each change by hand. Publishing to a custom domain requires a paid Site plan, but you can complete every step without publishing.

The first part builds the site with Webflow's own AI tools. Some AI actions, such as generating copy, CMS items, or code components, draw on your Workspace's monthly AI credits, which you can watch in the AI usage dashboard in Workspace settings. If the AI site builder option does not appear, ask your Workspace owner to switch on the Webflow AI toggle.

  1. Create an account. Sign up for a free Webflow account at webflow.com and open the Dashboard.
  2. Start an AI site. Choose New Site, select the AI site builder, and describe the business, for example the prompt in the first block below.
  3. Pick pages. Accept or adjust the suggested pages (up to five) and styles, then let the builder generate the draft.
  4. Refine with the AI Assistant. Open the site in the Designer, open the AI Assistant, and ask it to add a section, such as a three-card "Upcoming workshops" section on the home page.
A small pottery studio in Portland called Petal and Clay that offers
beginner wheel-throwing workshops, private lessons, and a shop for
handmade mugs. Warm, earthy colors, friendly tone. Pages: Home, About,
Workshops, Shop, Contact.

The second part connects Claude so an external agent can work on the same site through the Webflow MCP server. By default Claude asks for your approval before each action it takes in Webflow, and you can later set specific actions to always allow or block under Claude's connector settings. Developers who prefer the terminal can instead add the server to Claude Code with claude mcp add --transport http webflow https://mcp.webflow.com/mcp and authorize it the same way.

  1. Add the connector. In Claude, start a chat, select the plus (+) icon, open Connectors, choose Add connector, search for Webflow, and select Connect.
  2. Authorize access. Sign in to Webflow, choose the site you just created, and select Authorize App, then return to Claude.
  3. Add structured content. Paste the first prompt in the block below, approve each step, and check the Designer's CMS panel to see the new Collection and draft items.
  4. Run an audit. Paste the second prompt to have Claude review the site, then accept only the fixes you agree with.
Using my Webflow site "Petal and Clay", create a CMS Collection called
"Workshops" with fields: Name (plain text), Date (date/time), Instructor
(plain text), Price (number), and Summary (plain text). Add three sample
beginner workshops as drafts, and do not publish anything.

Now audit the site for SEO and accessibility issues. List missing alt text,
missing or overly long meta descriptions, and broken links, and propose
fixes for my approval before changing anything.

If Claude reports that it cannot see or change something on the canvas, open the Webflow MCP Bridge app from the Designer's Apps panel, since MCP 2.0 still uses it for tasks that need live visual context. Good next steps are adding Agent Instructions with your brand voice so every agent writes in the same style, connecting the "Workshops" Collection to the section the AI Assistant created, and trying App Gen to turn the Collection into an interactive class calendar. Before connecting a production site, review which Workspaces and sites the connector can reach, keep approvals switched on for publishing actions, and treat any web content an agent reads as a possible prompt injection source.

Why This Matters

Webflow AI shows how a mature website platform is responding to two pressures that threaten its core business. First, AI builders and coding agents such as Replit and similar tools have made it easy for almost anyone to produce a website, which Tong has argued shifts the hard problem from building pages to standing out. Second, answer engines from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Perplexity increasingly answer questions directly, so brands need to be cited inside AI responses rather than simply ranked in a list of links. Webflow's response is to bind AI generation to a company's real design system, content, analytics, and permissions, betting that enterprises will value governed, on-brand output over raw speed.

For marketing and web teams, the practical benefit is fewer handoffs. A marketer can ask an agent to draft a landing page variant, check it against brand rules in Agent Instructions, run an Optimize test, and see whether AI-referred visitors convert, all within one system and with an audit trail that shows which changes came from AI. For developers, the MCP server and Webflow Cloud turn Webflow into a backend that tools like Claude Code and Cursor can drive, which suits teams that want to work in code without abandoning a visual system for colleagues. This positions Webflow alongside the agent platforms listed in the Ready-to-Use AI Agent Comparison and the AI Agent Environment Selector.

The risks are real as well. Many of the most ambitious features, including AEO and its content agents, are limited to Enterprise customers, Source is only a research preview, and the credit-based pricing introduced in 2026 makes AI usage harder to forecast for agencies managing many client sites. Webflow's own AEO results are directional comparisons rather than controlled studies, AI-generated content still needs human review for accuracy and originality, and giving agents write access to a live site raises governance, privacy, and security questions that MCP 2.0's permissions and logs reduce but do not eliminate. The May 2026 layoffs and mixed community reaction to Webflow Conf 2026 also show that the company is betting its long-established designer and agency base on a still-unproven category.

Recent Developments

Between 2025 and late 2026, Webflow turned AI from a set of assistive features into the organizing idea of the whole company. It moved from AI-assisted building to connectors and agents that operate across the platform, and from website analytics to answer engine optimization. Most of these changes are documented in Webflow's product updates log and blog. The most significant developments were:

  • AI Site Builder and Webflow Cloud (early to mid-2025): Webflow introduced its AI site builder in early 2025, launched Webflow Cloud in private beta on May 5, 2025 for hosting Next.js and Astro apps on Cloudflare infrastructure, and made Cloud generally available in July 2025.
  • Prompt to Production at Webflow Conf 2025 (September 2025): At its New York conference, Webflow unveiled a revamped conversational AI Assistant, AI code generation for apps and React components, AI-powered SEO, AI suggestions in Optimize, and MCP access to the Designer.
  • App Gen (November 2025): App Gen entered public beta, letting users generate CMS-connected apps that follow a site's design system and deploy to Webflow Cloud.
  • Claude Connector (February 2026): Anthropic launched an official Webflow connector for Claude on February 9, 2026, and the AI site builder gained multi-page generation of up to five pages.
  • Vidoso Acquisition (March 2026): Webflow acquired Vidoso.ai on March 12, 2026, adding multimodal, on-brand asset generation for its marketing tools.
  • Webflow AEO (April to July 2026): Webflow announced AEO on April 13, made it generally available to Enterprise customers in May, added Gemini and Claude coverage, and released content optimization agents on July 28.
  • Pricing Overhaul and Restructuring (May 2026): On May 13, Webflow merged its CMS and Business plans into Premium, introduced the Team plan, and added metered AI credits to all Workspaces, and on May 27 CEO Linda Tong announced layoffs and a refocus on the agentic web marketing platform.
  • ChatGPT App and MCP 2.0 (July 2026): Webflow launched a ChatGPT app on July 1 and MCP 2.0 on July 21, adding design system support, Agent Instructions, analytics access, and governance, and reported that more than 30% of enterprise customers used its MCP server, with usage up fourfold since January.
  • Source and Webflow Conf 2026 (September 2026): At Webflow Conf 2026 in Boston, Webflow unveiled Source by Webflow as a limited research preview and announced Campaigns, Assets, AEO content agents, MCP 2.1 with GSAP interactions and Cloud deployment support, Releases for full-site branching, automatic Agent Instructions generation, and Agent Presence.
  • Gemini Connected App and Campaigns (October 2026): Webflow became a connected app in Google Gemini on October 15, available free in English in the United States, and launched Campaigns as a standalone AI tool for landing pages and ads on October 20.
  • Debates Over Direction, Pricing, and Results: Supporters argue that Webflow's design-system-first approach, governance, and closed-loop AEO make it more trustworthy than generic AI builders, and some agencies have praised Releases and MCP 2.1 as long-awaited improvements. Critics question whether Webflow is abandoning its designer and freelancer community for enterprise marketers, note that its share of the overall CMS market has been flat to slightly declining, and point out that several headline features remain Enterprise-only or in preview. Others caution that Webflow's AEO performance figures are self-reported comparisons that do not isolate the effect of the product from other marketing activity.

Additional Viewing

In this walkthrough, AI Andy demonstrates Webflow's AI site builder, going from a short description of a business to a generated website and then refining it in the Webflow Designer. It is a quick way to see the builder's prompt-to-draft workflow before trying it yourself. Because it shows a 2025 version of the builder, the current flow, which now supports multi-page sites of up to five pages, may look somewhat different.

This official Webflow demo walks through App Gen and explores examples of apps that can be built natively in Webflow from a prompt. It shows how generated apps reuse a site's design system and CMS content and deploy to Webflow Cloud, illustrating the "prompt to production" idea described in the App Gen section. It is a good companion for readers who want to go beyond the Getting Started example.

In this Webflow tutorial, the presenter connects Cursor to the Webflow MCP server by adding the configuration snippet from Webflow's developer documentation, authenticating through OAuth, selecting a Workspace, and approving write actions. It explains the basic permission model that still governs how agents work with Webflow. Webflow now marks the video as no longer maintained, and MCP 2.0 removed many of the earlier Designer requirements, so it is best used as a conceptual introduction.

In this episode from elvex, Webflow chief evangelist Guy Yalif explains answer engine optimization and why visitors referred by large language models tend to arrive further along in their buying decisions. He describes how Webflow's team built an AEO maturity assessment tool in a weekend using AI and automation, and how it scores sites on content, technical structure, authority, and measurement. It provides useful background for the Webflow AEO section of this page.
