Manus is an autonomous general-purpose artificial intelligence agent developed by Manus, an independent agent laboratory headquartered in Singapore. It is designed to move beyond conversational answers by planning and carrying out computer-based tasks, using a cloud computer, internet access, persistent files, software tools, and connected services to produce completed work products. Manus was created by the team behind Butterfly Effect Technology and was publicly launched in invitation-only beta on March 6, 2025. The founding group included CEO Xiao Hong, chief scientist Ji Yichao, also known as Peak, and product leader Tao Zhang.
Manus matters because it represents a shift from generative AI as an answer engine to generative AI as an action engine. Instead of requiring a user to supervise every step, Manus can research information, analyze data, create documents and presentations, build websites, generate media, operate browsers, connect to business applications, and return a finished result. The company describes this approach as extending human reach by giving more people the ability to use software and computational systems to accomplish complex work.
- The Mechanism: Manus receives a goal expressed in natural language, interprets the desired outcome, and breaks the request into a sequence of actions. Depending on the task, it can browse the web, read and transform files, write and execute code, install software, generate images or video, create documents and slides, interact with authorized services, and test the work it produces. Its cloud-computer environment gives it a place to execute tasks rather than limiting it to a chat window. The agent can also preserve context across longer workflows and organize outputs as reusable files, projects, or applications.
- The Principles: Manus is based on task delegation, tool use, iterative verification, and human control. Task delegation means that the user states the objective while the agent manages intermediate steps. Tool use allows the system to combine language models with browsers, code execution, file systems, connectors, and specialized creation environments. Iterative verification means that Manus can inspect, test, revise, and republish its work instead of stopping after generating an initial answer. Human control remains important because users define the goal, authorize access to external services, review results, and decide when an output is ready for use.
- Why This Matters: Conventional software often requires people to learn separate applications, move information between them, and perform repetitive operations manually. An action-oriented agent can connect research, analysis, writing, design, development, and automation within one workflow. This could make sophisticated digital work more accessible to non-specialists and allow small teams to operate with capabilities that previously required several separate tools or dedicated specialists. It also raises important questions about reliability, privacy, authorization, error handling, cost, and the appropriate level of autonomy for systems that can act on a user's behalf.
Recent Developments
In October 2025, Manus introduced Manus 1.5, an updated agent architecture focused on faster task completion, stronger reliability, larger context windows, and improved support for research, data analysis, web development, and presentation creation. The release also expanded full-stack application development, including persistent databases, authentication, analytics, access controls, custom domains, and integrated AI capabilities.
In December 2025, Manus announced that it was joining Meta. The announcement described Manus as an execution layer for general AI agents and stated that the product and subscription service would continue operating. In September 2026, Manus announced that it had formally resumed independent operations under its founding team. The company described itself as an independent agent laboratory focused on general AI agents.
In September 2026, Manus introduced Manus 2.0. The release added Cascade, a new agent harness intended to coordinate specialized capabilities within a connected project, as well as Cloud Computer environments for persistent projects and Automations that can begin work when a schedule or event in a connected service changes. Manus 2.0 also introduced Manus Studio, a shared workspace for people and AI, together with professional environments for documents, spreadsheets, PDFs, slides, websites, code, games, and video.
Manus 2.0 expanded the product beyond research and office work. Its Video Editor supports timeline-based editing of clips, images, text, motion graphics, and audio, while its Game Dev environment combines coding, image generation, video generation, asset editing, and publishing. The release also introduced Cue, a separate application for personal agents that can operate across phones and desktops.
During 2026, Manus added or expanded connectors and workflow features for services including Shopify, Slack, Google Workspace, Meta Ads, Instagram, Notion, Airtable, Similarweb, Zoom, HubSpot, Canva, and Supabase. These developments reflect a broader move from one-off task completion toward persistent projects, scheduled work, event-triggered automation, and software that can continue operating after the original conversation ends.
