Baidu's AI-powered chatbot, **Ernie**, was launched on **March 16, 2023** by Baidu CEO Robin Li. The chatbot has a wide range of skills including summarizing financial statements, producing PowerPoint presentations, generating images with text prompts, composing poetry and producing audio in Chinese dialects. It can also produce travel itineraries and virtual human-like livestreamers that can advertise products using scripts tailored to the user's needs. Baidu is confident that its AI chatbot won't make mistakes on "important and sensitive topics" due to its experience in tailoring its search engine to Chinese regulatory requirements. The company is waiting for government approval before launching its ChatGPT-like Ernie bot.
