Meaning Made is a competitive-collaborative tabletop engine-building game. Each π€player builds a personal engine of π§¬patterns while sharing responsibility for a fragile world under pressure.
πDrift represents instability. β€οΈSupport resists collapse. βοΈProjects strengthen shared structure. πMeaning rises when the system holds.
There are no hidden roles. No betrayal. Pressure comes from shared instability and scarce resources.
You are trying to:
- Build your π§¬Pattern engine.
- Complete βοΈProjects.
- Raise π‘οΈVitals.
- Score the most π³Legacy.
- And keep the world from collapsing.
Meaning is not found. It is made.
Players / Time
- 2β6 π₯Players
- 45β60 Minutes
- π€Solo variant is included below
Components
World Board
- π Event Deck
- βοΈProject Row (3 slots, cards face-up)
- and one (1) dedicated slot for Layer 10 πStewardship βοΈProject card.
- π§¬Pattern Gallery (6 face-up)
- πMeaning Track (0β12) is a dual shared track. When instability rises, move the marker DOWN on the track. When the group stabilizes or completes βοΈProjects, move the marker UP on the track. One marker tells the whole story. One marker. No formulas. No dual bookkeeping:
- The top number at the marker is πMeaning
- The bottom number is πDrift = 12 β πMeaning;
- For example, if the πMeaning marker is on 8:
- πMeaning = 8
- πDrift = 4
- When an π Event increases πDrift β move πMeaning Track marker DOWN.
- When β€οΈSupport reduces Drift β move πMeaning Track marker UP.
- When βοΈProjects complete β move πMeaning Track marker UP.
- If πMeaning marker reaches 0, the world collapses and the game ends immediately.
π€Player Mats
- π‘οΈVitals Track (0β10)
- π³Legacy Track (0β30)
- π§¬Pattern Stack (6 slots π§Ώ, βοΈ, π¦, π§«, π, π―)

- π§Requirement Paid - placed on item on βοΈProject's Requirement List.
- Track Markers:
- 2 markers for each π€Player's Mat; π‘οΈVitals and π³Legacy
- 1 marker for πMeaning Track on World Board
π§¬Pattern Cards
π§¬Patterns are engine cards you obtain and place into your 6-slot π§¬Pattern Stack (Layers 1β6).
Each π§¬Pattern card includes:
- π§¬Pattern Title: name of the Pattern
- Layer (1β6) and Layer Icon:
- Layer 1 π§ΏBoundary: Self vs world. Basic structure and limits.
- Layer 2 βοΈBalance: Regulation. Staying in a viable range under pressure.
- Layer 3 π¦Form: Repair, growth, and structural efficiency.
- Layer 4 π§«Membership: Reciprocity, reliability, collective function.
- Layer 5 πPrediction: Foresight, filtering, pattern recognition.
- Layer 6 π―Reinforcement: Value stabilization. Turning good actions into repeatable habits.
- Cost: token icons you must pay to obtain it
- Effect / Output: what it produces or changes
βοΈProject Cards
βοΈProjects are shared builds that raise the tableβs πMeaning and award competitive π³Legacy credit based on Contribution Order.
Each βοΈProject card includes:
- βοΈProject Title: name of the build
- Layer Tier (7β10) and Layer Icon
- Layer 7 πPresence - Moments of flexible choice, steering, and attention.
- Layer 8 ποΈSocial - Institutions, norms, and shared infrastructure.
- Layer 9 π³Story - Long-horizon continuity, memory, and generativity.
- Requirement List: (token icons) showing the total resources the group must collectively pay to complete the βοΈProject For example: βοΈ βοΈ βοΈ π π β€οΈ means the βοΈProject needs a total of 3 βοΈEnergy + 2 πInsight + 1 β€οΈSupport.
- Contribution Spaces: (typically 3β6) where players place a π€player token to record the order they contributed. These spaces are also the ranking record used to award π³Legacy (6 / 3 / 1).
- Completion Reward: πMeaning gain usually +1 or +2
- Completion Reward+: such as...
- All π₯players π‘οΈVitals +1
- Gain 1 token of your choice
- Refresh the π§¬Pattern Gallery
- Theme Note: The βοΈProject Table provides this theme sentence for quick context.
Setup
- Shuffle π Event Deck
- Shuffle π§¬Pattern Deck
- Place πMeaning Track marker = β³ 5
- Each π€player sets marker on their Player Mat:
- π‘οΈVitals = β³ 5
- π³Legacy = β³ 0
- Each π€player gets...
- 3 βοΈEnergy tokens
- 2 πInsight tokens
- 1 β€οΈSupport token
- 4 π€player tokens of their color (π΅ Blue, π΄ Red, π’ Green, π‘ Yellow, π£ Purple, π Orange)
- World Board: βοΈProjects
- From the βοΈProject Deck, place a βοΈProject card face-up in each of the three βοΈProject slots (A, B, C).
- Find the fixed endgame card; Layer 10 πStewardship βοΈProject and place it face-up separate from the βοΈProjects Row.
- Choose starting π€player.
Rounds
Each round has four phases:
Phase βΆβ π Event
- Reveal π Event card face-up.
- Move πMeaning marker DOWN by listed amount.
Phase β· β Refresh
- Fill empty π§¬Pattern Gallery slots with π§¬Pattern cards from π§¬Pattern Deck.
- During your turn, you may convert 2 βοΈEnergy into 1 β€οΈSupport.
- This conversion does NOT count as an Action.
- Limit: Once per turn.
Phase βΈ β π€Player Turns (Acquire/Obtain/Contribute/Touchpoint)
Each π€player can take 2 actions.
Phase βΉ β πStability Window
- Each π€Player may donate at most 1 β€οΈSupport. For each β€οΈSupport donated move πMeaning Track marker UP by 1.
- Remove this Round's face-up π
Event card from play.
Group Cap Note: The Group may move the πMeaning marker UP a maximum of 3 spaces total per Round, regardless of π€Player count.
Actions
Each turn each π€Player may take 2 Actions.
Action: βοΈAcquire
- Take any 2 tokens: βοΈEnergy and/or πInsight.
- You may NOT take β€οΈSupport directly with βοΈAcquire.
Action: Obtain π§¬Pattern
- Pay cost as shown on π§¬Pattern card.
- Place in correct Layer slot (1β6) (π§ΏβοΈπ¦π§«ππ―). You may stack multiple π§¬Patterns in a matching slot on your π§¬Pattern Stack.
Layer Discount: If you already own a π§¬Pattern for the same layer:
- Pay 1 fewer token (your choice) for each π§¬Pattern card.
- Only one discount per purchase.
Action: Contribute βοΈProject
You may choose an available βοΈProject and contribute one or more tokens to its shared Requirement List.
- You may take this action during Phase βΈ as one of your two actions.
- You may contribute to a given βοΈProject at most once per round.
- Choose a face-up βοΈProject (including Layer 10 πStewardship βοΈProject if πMeaning β₯ 8).
- Pay any combination of required tokens that are still needed (from the Requirement List shown on the card).
- If this is your first time contributing to the βοΈProject, place your π€Player token (π΅ Blue, π΄ Red, π’ Green, π‘ Yellow, π£ Purple, π Orange) in the next open Contribution Space to record your Contribution Order.
- Mark the paid βοΈProject Requirement icon(s) as fulfilled with a marker.
Important Clarifications
- The Requirement List is the total shared cost. It is NOT split by space.
- Contribution Spaces record order, NOT cost. Earlier spaces earn better π³Legacy.
- You may pay 1 token or many tokens in a single Contribute action.
- If you contribute again to the same βοΈProject in a later round, you do NOT put another marker in a Contribution Space. Your order is determined by your first Contribution.
βοΈProject Completion When all required icons in the Requirement List are fulfilled, the βοΈProject completes immediately:
- Award π³Legacy by Contribution Order (6 / 3 / 1):
- First contributor: 6 π³Legacy
- Second: 3 π³Legacy
- Others who contributed: 1 π³Legacy
- Move the πMeaning marker UP as listed on the card (usually +1 or +2).
- All π₯players who participated in the βοΈProject receive the cardβs Completion Reward+ (if present).
- Refill the empty βοΈProject slot from the βοΈProject Deck (Stewardship is fixed and does NOT refill).
- After scoring, remove all π€Player tokens from the completed βοΈProject and return them to their owners.
- When the Layer 10 πStewardship βοΈProject completes the game ends.
Action: π¬ Touchpoint
Give OR request 1 token. If accepted:
- Both π₯players gain +1 π‘οΈVitals.
End of Game
Game ends immediately if:
- πMeaning reaches 0 (Collapse), or
- Layer 10 πStewardship βοΈProject completes.
Scoring
- π€Player's Score = π‘οΈVitals + π³Legacy ... Highest Score wins.
- π₯Group Outcome = Use πMeaning to lookup in table:
| π Meaning | Outcome | What It Feels Like |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | Collapse | Structure failed. Instability overwhelmed coordination. Nothing sustainable remained. |
| 1 | Critical | Survival only. Every gain required emergency correction. |
| 2 | Precarious | Functional but constantly unstable. |
| 3 | Strained | Stability required heavy effort each round. |
| 4 | Recovering | The group found rhythm after instability. |
| 5 | Functional | Instability rose, but was matched by response. |
| 6 | Coordinated | Support moved efficiently. Projects mattered. |
| 7 | Stable | Players built confidently under pressure. |
| 8 | Resilient | Shocks absorbed without fragmentation. |
| 9 | Stewarding | Long-horizon thinking emerged. |
| 10 | Strong Pattern | Structure outpaced instability. |
| 11 | Durable | Cooperative discipline felt natural. |
| 12 | Flourishing | The system sustained itself with surplus stability. |

Winner: Casey.
System State: Durable.
π€Solo Variant
In Solo Mode, you are not alone in the world. The π§βπ€βπ§Community represents the rest of society acting in parallel to you. It builds, contributes, and competes for credit β but it does not help stabilize the system.
The π§βπ€βπ§Community does NOT take turns. It advances βοΈProjects automatically at the end of each round.
You must outbuild the π§βπ€βπ§Community while also keeping the system alive.
Solo Setup
Use standard setup.
- Place a neutral marker beside the βοΈProject Row to represent the π§βπ€βπ§Community.
- Optionally use the following:
| Category | Easy | Hard |
|---|---|---|
| βοΈEnergy tokens (start) | 4 | 2 |
| πInsight tokens (start) | 3 | 1 |
| β€οΈSupport tokens (start) | 2 | 0 |
| π‘οΈVitals marker (start) | 6 | 4 |
| πMeaning marker (start) | 6 | 4 |
| Layer 10 πStewardship βοΈProject Contribute Threshold | πMeaning β₯ 7 | πMeaning β₯ 9 |
Phase βΉ β Stability Window (Solo Rule)
You must choose:
- Donate 1 β€οΈSupport β Move πMeaning marker UP 2.
- Donate 0 β€οΈSupport β Move πMeaning marker DOWN 1.
This creates the solo tension: You must invest in stability or accept decay.
π§βπ€βπ§Community Rule
At the end of every round, after Phase βΉ:
1. Identify the leftmost βοΈProject with an open Contribution Space. 2. The π§βπ€βπ§Community fills the next available slot. 3. Place the neutral marker in that slot.
The π§βπ€βπ§Community:
- Pays no cost.
- Does NOT gain tokens.
- Does NOT participate in Stability Window.
- Only competes for βοΈProject rank.
When a βοΈProject completes:
- The π§βπ€βπ§Community counts for rank (first, second, etc.).
- Award Legacy normally.
- Move πMeaning marker UP as listed.
- Refill βοΈProject Row.
The π§βπ€βπ§Community represents ongoing background societal effort that progresses whether or not you participate.
Solo Difficulty Levels
Choose one before setup.
Easy β Cooperative Society
Adjustments:
- In Stability Window, donating 1 β€οΈSupport β Move πMeaning marker UP 3 instead of 2.
- If you donate 0 β€οΈSupport β No automatic β1 penalty.
- Community only fills a Project slot every other round (Rounds 2, 4, 6, etc.).
Use Easy to learn pacing and long-term planning.
Standard β Competitive Society
Default rules:
- Donate 1 β€οΈSupport β +2 Meaning.
- Donate 0 β β1 Meaning.
- Community fills one Project slot every round.
This is the intended baseline difficulty.
Hard β Accelerating Drift
Adjustments:
- Donate 1 β€οΈSupport β +2 Meaning (no bonus).
- Donate 0 β β2 Meaning.
- Community fills one Project slot every round.
- If Meaning is 5 or lower at end of round, Community fills two Project slots instead of one.
Hard mode represents a world where instability amplifies background pressure.
Community Scaling Rule (Optional Advanced Variant)
Instead of fixed speed, Community scales with instability.
At the end of each round:
If πMeaning is:
- 9β12 β Community fills 0 slots.
- 6β8 β Community fills 1 slot.
- 3β5 β Community fills 2 slots.
- 0β2 β Community fills 3 slots.
This creates a feedback loop: The more unstable the system becomes, the faster society moves without you.
Use this variant for dynamic tension and higher replay value.
Solo End of Game
Game ends if:
- πMeaning reaches 0 (Immediate Loss), OR
- A designated Layer 10 βοΈProject completes.
Solo Scoring
Final Score: π‘οΈVitals + π³Legacy
If πMeaning reached 0 β System Collapse (automatic loss).
Otherwise compare your score:
| Final Score | Personal Result |
|---|---|
| 0 | Done |
| 1β14 | Survived |
| 15β19 | Stabilizer |
| 20β24 | Builder |
| 25β29 | Steward |
| 30+ | World-Grade Contributor |
Lessons Learned: Meaning Made.
Meaning is not discovered. Meaning is built through coordinated resistance to instability.
π Drift rises naturally.
π‘οΈ Vitals reflects internal stability and reciprocity; life resists instability.
β€οΈ Support resists instability.

βοΈ Projects increase shared structure.
π Meaning increases when systems hold.
The winner builds best β but the group determines if the world survives.
Glossary
World State
π Meaning: The shared stability level of the world (0β12). Higher πMeaning means the table is holding together.
π Drift: Instability and external pressure. πDrift is NOT tracked separately: πDrift = 12 β πMeaning (same marker).
World Board Areas
π
Event: A card revealed each round that reduces πMeaning (external pressure).
𧬠Pattern Gallery: Six face-up π§¬Pattern cards available to obtain.
βοΈ Projects: Shared builds (3 face-up slots) that award competitive π³Legacy by contribution order and raise πMeaning when completed.
βοΈ Stewardship Project: A fixed Layer 10 βοΈProject present from setup. You may contribute to it only when πMeaning is at or above the Stewardship threshold. Completing Stewardship Project ends the game.
π Stability Window: Phase βΉ. Each player may donate at most 1 β€οΈSupport. Each donated β€οΈSupport moves πMeaning Track marker UP by 1, up to a Group cap of +3 per round.
Player Tracks
π‘οΈ Vitals: Your personal stability and social integration (0β10). π‘οΈVitals increase through accepted π¬Touchpoints and certain βοΈProject rewards.
π³ Legacy: Your competitive score track (0β30). π³Legacy is mainly earned from completing βοΈProjects (6 / 3 / 1 by contribution order).
Tokens
βοΈ Energy: Basic fuel for obtaining π§¬Patterns and contributing to βοΈProjects.
π Insight: Planning and cognitive leverage used for higher-tier or more efficient builds.
β€οΈ Support: Repair and relationship maintenance. Used for Stability Window donations and sometimes required by βοΈProjects.
Accounting Tokens for recording π€ Player's Contributions to a βοΈProject
π§ Requirement Paid - placed on item on βοΈProject's Requirement List.
π€ Player Token: π΅ Blue, π΄ Red, π’ Green, π‘ Yellow, π£ Purple, π Orange
A player-colored marker used to claim a βοΈProjectβs Contribution Space and record contribution order.
Core Actions
βοΈ Acquire: Take any 2 tokens.
𧬠Obtain Pattern: Pay the βοΈPatternβs cost and place it in the matching Layer slot on your mat (Layers 1β6).
βοΈ Contribute Project: Pay one or more required tokens to a chosen βοΈProjectβs Requirement List
π¬ Touchpoint: Give OR request 1 token from another player. If accepted, both players gain +1 π‘οΈVitals.
